How is success determined?

Success rates following IVF treatment are dependent on many factors including the age of the egg and sperm providers, the type of fertility issue, the duration of infertility , the lifestyle of the patients, (whether they smoke, are overweight etc) the technology used in the IVF laboratory and the skill of the medical and scientific staff who manage the fertility treatment.

One of the most significant factors in determining a successful cycle is the age of the woman whose eggs are used in the treatment.

As a woman’s age increases, the success rate drops. This is because the quality and/or quantity of a woman’s eggs reduce as she grows older. This decline can start to commence by age 35 and speeds up by the age of 40 and continues to decline until the age of menopause, at about 51 years of age.

So even though IVF can assist people to have their family,  IVF treatment cannot make up for the natural decline of age on the number and quality of eggs that may be able to be retrieved. Therefore, using a donated egg from a younger woman can increase the chance of conceiving. As the success is dependent on the age of the egg donor and the quality of the egg.

For example, a woman  who is 45 years of age, using an egg donor who is 21  you would expect the success rates to be around 40-50% rather than  a 2-5% chance if the woman was using her own eggs.
